Pharming

Pharming is the latest form of an internet scam.  Pharming is just a bit different than phishing.  In Phishing scams, the attacker relies on the victim replying to an email asking for personal information.  Pharming works invisibly, behind the scenes.  The attacker slightly alters a legitimate web address which in turn leads the victim to a fake website.  By changing just a few letters or characters in the URL (web address) the victim goes to a website that looks almost exactly like the real site.   The victim enters any required information and the criminals use this information to apply for new credit cards, withdraw money from the victims bank accounts, apply for loans…the list goes on and on.

How to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of Pharming:

o       Always look for the padlock symbol in the lower corner of the website.

o       If you are at a site and it just doesn’t “feel” right, call the business by telephone.

o       Watch for “Certificates”.  When you visit a site that uses certificates, you will see a box asking if you want to trust the certificate.  Compare the names on the certificate and the website.  If the name on the certificate does not match the name on the site, you know that something is wrong.
